Inspired by the connection between quilts and homemaking, As the Crow Calls Across the River considers the exterior of my family's generational cabin in rural Oklahoma, depicted on three panels of cotton muslin stitched together by hand. Like traditional Christian altarpieces (triptychs), which comprised three hinged and painted panels, the painting is broken into thirds along these hinged seams. Soft, wintry light plays between suggestions of trees, the architectural outlines of the house, and flattened geometric forms that vaguely resemble the pieces of a quilt. In contrast to the vastness of the scene it depicts, the small scale of the piece lends it a sense of quiet preciousness--inviting the viewer to lean in and listen.
